The Montgomery County Department of Police announced the arrests of four people on Wednesday, May 24, following a lengthy investigation involving an AR-15 that was reportedly stolen out of Alexandria in Virginia.
Humberto Guerra, Jr., 28, of Silver Spring, who had two outstanding warrants out for his arrest stemming from a traffic stop on Friday, Feb. 17, when the rifle was recovered, is in police custody after he and his sister were spotted by officers last week at a Germantown 7-Eleven.
Police say that on Tuesday, May 16, officers spotted Guerra and his 29-year-old sister Maria Argueta, also of Silver Spring - who had an outstanding warrant of her own for a March burglary - get into a Honda CR-V in Germantown with three others.
During the subsequent traffic stop, both the brother and sister attempted to provide officers with false identities to avoid getting arrested, though the officials were not duped, and the group was ordered out of the car.
While searching the vehicle, police say that officers found a semi-automatic pistol in the back seat with the serial number obliterated, leading to the arrest of both Guerra and Argueta.
Guerra and Argueta were charged with:
- Providing false statements;
- Possession of controlled dangerous substances;
- Multiple firearm-related charges.
They are being held at the Central Processing Unit.
A passenger in the backseat who was sitting next to Guerra and the recovered semi-automatic pistol, 24-year-old Gaithersburg resident Khyarah Hazel Taylor, was arrested and charged with drug and weapon offenses.
According to police, Myles Bennette, 29, of Baltimore, was also arrested from the vehicle after advising officers that too he had an active warrant out for his arrest.
No initial court dates for any of the four were announced by the police.
